Outreach ~ St. Mark's Port Hope

Members of St. Mark's Church have a long history of involvement in outreach projects collectively and individually.

Our primary project is FaithWorks, the Annual Appeal of the Diocese of Toronto that raises funds for the delivery of direct, practical assistance to those in need or at risk. In 2004 St. Mark's was honoured to receive the Most Generous Parish Award for the Trent-Durham area, and continues to be recognised as a lead parish in the campaign each year. FaithWorks funds directed to parish outreach projects go to Access Community Centre, Community Care, Fare Share, Northumberland Services for Women, the Canadian Bible Society, and Alpha House.

Each week non-perishable food donations are collected for Fare Share, a local food bank, and a small basket containing one or two items, representative of these, is presented at the altar each Sunday.

St. Mark's provides funds to the Port Hope Benevolent Society, which enables clerics in Port Hope churches to provide food vouchers to people in emergency situations.

St. Mark's supports the Salvation Army’s “Soupertime” lunches, which provide an affordable lunch to approximately 40 people each Tuesday through the fall, winter and spring. The lunches are prepared and served in the Parish Hall.

St. Mark's is represented on the board of “ Maples Court ” which provides affordable housing for seniors.

The Church also provides space in its Parish Hall for meetings of AA,
Nicotine Anonymous and Scouts Canada.

St. Marks is working with the Green Wood Coalition and providing a community dinner every two months.

Coalition's Mission
"To provide community-based life solutions in a healthy, secure environment."

A group of friends started spending time at Greenwood Tower Motel in Port Hope during the summer of 2006. Greenwood Tower was a motel on the eastern edge of Port Hope that offers monthly accommodation to individuals and families who would otherwise be homeless.

Calling themselves the Greenwood Tower Initiative (GTI), this ad hoc group continued to share weekly meals and conversation with friends who have been pushed to the margins of polite society. They believed that, regardless of their life circumstances, every person deserves a safe, clean, secure place to live.

Since it began, this group of volunteers has grow more than a dozen people and is helped out by several supporting church groups. The communal dinner has become the basic structure for developing relationships and for creative problem solving. A level of frustration with the obstacles faced by their friends at the motel led GTI to discussions about finding solutions.

In 2009 when some of the individuals involved with the weekly dinners felt that it was time to begin seeking better solutions for the residents of Greenwood Motel and others in the community, they began meeting with members of the Northumberland County Affordable Housing Steering Committee (NCAHSC). The result of that series of meetings was the formation of an Ontario Not-For-Profit Corporation called Green Wood Coalition.
